Why have people always worn jewellery?

Humans have worn jewelry for a very long time. Archaeological findings show that more than a hundred thousand years ago, people began using shells, bones, and small stones as body decoration. This makes jewelry one of the oldest forms of human creation.

Early jewelry was often made from what was readily available in nature: seashells, teeth, bones, or colored minerals. Later, people began to process metals and gemstones, and jewelry became more advanced in both form and technique. Although the materials have changed throughout history, the core idea remains – to wear something on the body that makes it more beautiful and expressive.

Adorning the body is a very ancient human behavior. In almost all cultures, people have wanted to enhance their appearance, decorate the body, and create something that feels personal. Jewelry can reinforce a sense of identity, but also simply bring joy through form, color, and material.

At the same time, jewelry has often had other functions. It has been able to show belonging to a family, a group, or a culture. In many societies, it has marked social status or important life events. A ring, a pendant, or a bracelet could tell something about the person wearing it – even without words.

Jewelry has also often had symbolic meaning. At various times, people have worn amulets or talismans that were believed to protect the wearer or possess special power. Even as such beliefs change, the symbols often continue to live on, sometimes more as tradition or personal significance.
